Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies

The University of Sarajevo – Faculty of Political Sciences, in partnership with the University of Basel – Faculty of Humanities and the Institute for Conflict Transformation and Peacebuilding (Switzerland), the University of Belgrade – Faculty of Political Sciences (Serbia) and the University of Zagreb – Faculty of Political Sciences (Croatia) is pleased to announce the third round call for applications for the Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies (www.see-peace.net).

The Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies consists of two semesters, each carrying 30 ECTS credits. Upon completing both semesters and attaining 60 ECTS, the student will be awarded the title Master of Arts (MA) in Political Science–Peace Studies. The diploma is issued by the home University (where the student is enrolled), and enjoys reciprocal recognition by the other partner universities. The Master program is taught in English language.

The masters program strongly encourages student mobility. All partner Universities have the same curriculum during the first semester, and in the second each University offers specialized programs. Students enroll at their chosen home University in the first semester. They may decide to remain at their home University in the second semester as well, or they may chose to spend the second semester at one of the partner Universities.

What is the content of the Program?

The Regional Master’s Program in Peace Studies is an advanced inter-disciplinary program designed for both students and practitioners, offering an expertise in four specialized fields: Conflict Resolution (University of Belgrade); Peace and Development (University of Sarajevo); Mediation for Development, Peace, and Security (University of Basel); and Peace and Security in South East Europe (University of Zagreb). Lectures from all partner universities will contribute to courses in the program through a teacher’s mobility scheme.

This program is the first master’s program in Peace Studies offered on a regional scale, providing a unique perspective and high-quality education. Encompassing scientific achievements of various disciplines, including political science, sociology, history, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy, it represents a crucial contribution toward advancing understanding of various interstate and international conflicts, as well as of some of today’s key global social and geopolitical problems. The regional mobility of students, professors, and practitioners, and articulation of local/regional specificities in the context of global dynamics offers a uniquely broad approach and experience. Besides enhancing theoretical and methodological capacities in the area of peace and conflict studies, the program offers students an opportunity for independent research and option to take part in collaborative problem-solving projects.

The overarching aim of the program is to enable students to develop their theoretical knowledge, diagnostic capacities, and practical skills related to preventing and resolving complex conflicts. By completing this master’s program, students will be simultaneously empowered as researchers and practitioners.
